CHAPTER 1: Working “with, not “for” the Fort Mill Times
When I moved to South Carolina, the Lord put it on my heart to write a letter to the Editor of the local paper to see if I could contribute things from time to time.
I told him a bit about myself and although I did not have the education and training his staff certainly must have had, I did have great love and enthusiasm for writing.
I told him my idea about interviewing, writing about and publishing articles on people in the community. By the grace of God, he allowed me to do just that with a few freelance opportunities!
When I contacted the people I was to interview, since I was not an “employee” of the _____ ______Times, I had to carefully construct my approach as to how I introduced myself. Technically, I was a freelance writer, working on an article for publication in the paper. One way would have been accurate, the other would have been a misrepresentation.
Chapter 2 Credentials
For the past few years, our oldest has been asked to do editing for the ________ Bowl in Florida. When I talk to her, it is amusing to me the things she says she has access to that many guys would love to be able to do!
This year I was asking her what her proximity to the “action” (games) was and nonchalantly. she responded “Oh, I can go out of the office and I am practically right at the field.” Ha! She enjoyed opportunities that were enviable by anyone who spent hard-earned money just to get seats in the “nose bleed” sections.
She actually was able to interview some of the players (even for Bama when they competed there) a few years ago. Now, could she have just waltzed up to the sidelines and started chatting, of course not! She had the required credentials to even get into the stadium, much less restricted areas.
CHAPTER 3 Who Are You
Although my daughter was promoted to the position of Sergeant in the Army, if I were to go to the White House and try to get in, saying Sgt _______ sent me, no one would know who she was, nor would they care. I would be turned away and expected to leave (possibly with a shadow, but that’s just conspiracy theory thinking!)
If, however, she was expecting me to visit the base where she is stationed and lives, I could to the guard at the gate, give her name, my id and get access. (Maybe not after the White House visit.)
I could not gain entrance merely for being who I am, an ordinary citizen.
Chapter 4 Room Mom
When our son was in 4th grade, the school had a policy that all parties and events for 4th graders had to be “equal” or at least closely matched, so the children in all classes would experience “equal treatment”. Oh boy! Regardless of the creativity other teachers or parents had, no 4th grade class was suppose to “out-do” another!
Well, each year since she started teaching, Mrs. Nichols had a Dr. Seuss-themed party. As long as the other classes were offered the same opportunity and declined it, the event was permissible. Okay, needless to say, none of the others wanted to participate in Mrs. Nichols’ plan… too bad for them!
As room mother and a firm disbeliever that all classes were required to conform, simply to avoid hurt feelings, we enjoyed a blowout! It never really seemed to make sense either that this policy was started once the kids reached almost middle school age.
Doesn’t it seem that the younger they were, the more children would misunderstand differences such as parties or activities? By 4th grade, they should start realizing that everything and everyone is not equal. Classroom dynamics vary and individualism should be celebrated all the more (my thinking anyway).
Long story seemingly longer: The day of the big event, I marched proudly into the school dressed as a “Who”. I looked ridiculous, but we had a grand time eating “Who roast beast” and drinking “Who punch”.
As his mom, the room mother for Mrs. Nichols, I was welcomed by the school and into the classroom. Oh, after that year, the other classes decided to adopt the “Who” idea for their classes as well!

In all the above circumstances, there had to be a purpose for being in a particular place and reputable validation.
Moses must have been extremely intimidated with the prospect of having to stand before the people, but just look at the powerful credentials he was given, permission to say he was sent by I AM!
O how we thank You for Who You Are
We recognize Your power
God, without You
We can do nothing
But with You, anything
The God Who was with Moses
Is with us today
Let us fall on our faces before You
For being loved
Lord, when we talk to You
Please keep us disciplined
Keeping away from distractions
When we pray, let us please realize
We are speaking to our Creator
And help us forsake temptation to
Interrupt the conversation between us
To reach for the phone or answer a text
We cannot serve two masters
We cannot claim You on our heart’s throne
If we surrender to those things competing against our time and attention
We are weak, Father
We ask for Your help
We ask that You will reveal when we are putting You
Any place other than First in our lives
Forgive us when we fall short
Please give us a love for You, O God
and Praise to You
