Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away
Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success..
Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Usually upon waking in the morning, I look at my phone to see if I have missed any calls or received texts from anyone. I hate to admit how many times I have been convicted; however, rather than change my pattern, I continue my routine. Instead of first, trying to see who called or sent me messages, I need to start by talking to the Lord and looking into Scripture to find out what He has to say to me. One thing is for certain, nothing anyone had to say by call or texts bears any weight on the scale of importance to God’s Word or going to Him in prayer.
There were so many years when common man did not have a Bible of his own. Scripture would be read to him aloud and he would not get fed again until the next service . This means that he would have to listen intently to remember what he could and manage his family by what he learned. There was no going back and re -reading, no time to sit there and study for himself or with his wife and children. What was missed, was missed, until printed versions were distributed for personal use.
There were reasons the Scripture was unavailable to the public for so many years, from the church leaders not wanting it in the hands of congregants because access opened doors of questioning of their authority to translate, to widespread illiteracy. Today we have it, though, now what?
It’s 2015 and where IS our Bible? Is it a “family” heirloom in the den, prominently displayed, holding old photos and birth certificates, a relic? An antique or decoration? Do we have one in every room, ready and waiting to be read? Is it useful when we need a hard surface to write something? Is it under the tablet we reach for to play Internet games or check social media? A coaster to protect our furniture? Is it in the back seat or trunk from Sunday to Sunday? Or is it at our bedside table, with a worn out cover and highlighted pages, passages scribbled with dates beside them, where we can get to it every night and grab for it like a lifeline each morning?
You may not have the same issues, but some of us might. If this is your struggle, unless the Word of God or talking to Him is not just among ,but IS your highest priority, let’s be challenged to make it so. We most definitely are His!
O Gracious and Loving Father
How we thank You for Your Word
We are so blessed that we can come to You through the blood of Your Son, Jesus
Lord, for so many years, Your people were not permitted to have a copy of the Word for themselves
So few could read or understand it because of language barriers, political or religious domination or lack of education
We give You praise for literacy
Please give us the ability to not only intellectually. but most importantly, spiritually understand what You are saying to us
Thank You for speaking through the Scripture
We know, Lord, that at any time, the privilege to own a copy of Your Word may be illegal
Lord, the possession of the Bible now is causing issues in the workplace and only You know how much longer before that mentality invades our very homes
We MUST keep Your Word hidden in our hearts for such a time
For times when we need to give an answer for the faith we have You and do not want to be unprepared
Lord, we want to call to mind Your Word when others need to hear it
When situations are presented for us to share and we do not have access to look up a passage
Our hearts will be so familiar that You pull from the resources in our mind, an appropriate Scripture for the moment
Let us proclaim it boldly and confidently
Father, please clear our minds of the trivial things we remember and fill our thoughts and hearts with Your precious words
If we know the Word, we know You, O God
You tell us that we can have the desires of our heart
Father, let us desire to know You more
And use our time, effort and energy, staying in constant fellowship with You
To know and understand You better
We love You, Lord
Let us demonstrate that
Please give us a yearning to read about Your love for us
You spent Your time, breathing these words into existence
We are blessed by the opportunity to read what You have written to us
Let us not pilfer our Gift by neglecting to treasure It
Draw us close to continually pray as You tell us
How perplexing it is that our Creator, King of All
Keeps His arms open at all times
And is always there waiting whenever we are ready to talk!
We ask that You give us a heart of thanksgiving
We know we can come to you in trials or triumph
Whatever the situation, nothing is too great or small for our Father
Most of all, let us listen to and obey what You tell us
Keep us, please, eager to hear and follow when, where and how You lead
Your will be done, Father, on earth as it is in Heaven
In the Name of Your Son, Jesus
