19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Mom was not a materialistic woman. She worked very hard for what she had and she was careful and wise in how she invested her resources.
That being said though, if she noticed someone broke or misused something, especially anything she gave, it would upset her. For example, she bought me the Christmas Barbie every year, however, I was not permitted to take it out of the box since it was a “collectible” and worth more as it was.
I have to tell you, getting a doll and not being able to play with it was not my idea of excitement as a young girl. I had Madame Alexander and such, so I was already restricted there, but a Barbie, really? She always had long, wavy hair and a beautiful dress, but if I so much as dented the box while admiring, Mom got annoyed.
For the parents among us, there are things our moms and dads may have done that we just set our minds to we would NOT do with our own children. One of the ideas I was dead-set against was the whole “collectible” thing!
Although I didn’t personally give my children toys they were not suppose to play with, well, maybe a few Beanie Babies, mom did! They knew that a gift from E Momma, however nice and thoughtful, was probably something they could look at and weren’t allowed to actually use. As they got older, she gave them one gift they could play with and something else for display.
Not too long after we moved to the house we are in now, I came across some of those Christmas dolls with dented boxes and tore them open like a box of chocolate chip cookies. I suppose the years of waiting to do that finally caught up to me!
November will make 10 years since Mom passed away, boy how that time flew and yet still seems like yesterday. Since then, I don’t know how many things of sentimental value I have lost, broken or messed up, but I catch myself getting frustrated when that happens, just because I can just imagine Mom’s aggravation.
Recently I stopped and caught myself though. Now Mom would tell me that it is all just junk and it doesn’t matter. She, as I have said many times before, was such a precious, godly lady. Being up there in the presence of our King, I am certain she would reassure me that there is absolutely not one thing on this earth “worth a hill of beans” in comparison to what He has in store for us!
Merciful Father and Gracious Lord
Thank You for Who You Are
You are the Treasure of Heaven
You bring life and hope
Please keep our belongings in perspective, Lord
We acknowledge You as our Great Provider
You bless us abundantly, Lord
Thank You for Paul who tells us that he found contentment not only in wealth but in poverty
Father, please let us be thankful in the midst of our circumstances,
Let our mouths speak praise as well as petition
Please open our hearts to intercede for others
Lord, we ask that You will not allow anything of this world to hold any substantial value to us
But allow our hearts to be drawn Heavenly, to love You and others
Father, we want to gain crowns of glory
So one sweet day, we will have something worthwhile to present
As we bow at His feet!
Our possessions, education, titles, social status
Will burn away in an instant, Father
As the piles of insignificance they are
We want to honor and magnify our Savior
Might that be the true desire and ambition of our heart
In the Name of Jesus Christ,
“Crown Him With Many Crowns”
“Give Me Jesus”
“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”
“When We All Get To Heaven”
“This World Is Not My Home”
