1 Peter 3:8-9
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
This topic came to me today. I am conflicted following the devotional on pride earlier. I can’t reconcile if this is on the prideful side of the fence or merely wanting to be heard. I am going with the latter since my points are not entirely selfish ramblings. First, we should focus on listening to the Lord, then exercise awareness that others may want to engage, given the chance.
Our Sunday school teacher posed a question to the class and I wanted to contribute but as I started to speak, someone else jumped in and gave an opinion.
After the leader expounded on that answer, another person spoke up with different point of view.
After the class, I told My husband that I wanted to say something, but I couldn’t find an appropriate time to inject my thoughts.
Due to my upbringing, one, being the youngest of six, my voice was not really considered (yes, I do realize how pitiful that sounds, but any others reading who were the youngest knows where I am coming from I bet). Two, my mom taught me not to interrupt when others spoke!
Now I can carry on once I get started, don’t get me wrong, it’s just taking the leap and finding the right time to jump into a discussion is where I get reluctant, unless it is with Jonathan or my children.
At times when I talk to someone and they ask how I am doing, I feel as though, long after I have gone into extensive detail, I totally manipulated the conversation!
I know this is terrible, but I am going to tell you, anyway: Since my mother DID instruct me not to interrupt, especially someone older, I tried this with my mother-in-law and found only one way I was able to remedy this situation a few times!
Having call waiting is a blessing and curse! At times, on the phone with my mother-in-law, she would just start talking and talking and TALKING! A few times, my call waiting came through and it was either one of my children or my mom who sometimes called to tell me that her blood sugar was dropping and I would either walk her through getting a snack and wait on the phone until she felt better or I would head over to her house to assist if it was lower than I was comfortable dealing with over the phone.
As much as I tried to politely tell Mrs. Carter that I had another call I needed to answer, I could not get a word in at all! Finally, I just went to the other call without saying anything to her. The funny thing was, when I went back to her call, she was STILL TALKING! She had no idea whatsoever that I had ever even left our conversation!
Let’s be courteous of one another and allow each other to contribute. If someone sits silently, it may not be because they have nothing to say, it possibly is because they were not given the chance!
Let’s not stifle those who want to say something, nor try to drag something out of a person who is more reserved. Let’s keep a careful and respectful eye out for those around us.
Most of all, let’s consider how many times Jesus mentioned LISTENING! Let’s zip our lips and open our heart to what our Savior is saying!
You Are One of few words
Yet those You spoke are True and profound
Father, when someone wants to speak
Please give them opportunity to do so
We ask that our words glorify You, God
May we wait patiently on our chance to speak
We don’t want to be the one who misses out on a chance to contribute to conversation
Nor do we want to be the other, who is inconsiderate and prevent those who want to express thoughts or feelings from doing so
Father, as sisters and brothers in Christ, sometimes we are not as conscious of one another as we should be when it comes to their need to speak or stay silent
Help us, please, Lord
Most of all, Lord, when we come to You, let us listen to what You have to say in times we feel inclined to do all the talking!
We come to You so often, talking incessantly about our wants and needs
We ask You questions, make petitions, seek Your direction
Yet we do not give You an opportunity to answer!
Thank You for our ears, Lord
Please let us use them wisely!
