Obedience: No Understanding Required

JAMES 1:19-20

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Noah-It took a long time to build the ArkI. Throughout the process, possibly, (although I find no mention directly in the Bible), Noah was ridiculed, yet he remained obedient to the Lord

Hebrews 11:7 – By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

Matthew 24:37-39,But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

Abraham and Sarai-  Instead of continuing to wait on Sarai to have children, she sent her husband to another woman! Abraham and Sarai chose their desires over the Lord’s Will, and Abraham produced Ishmael with Hagar.Do we assume what God’s plans are for our lives, and make decisions on those basis? We could have acceptable results, but would we give glory to God or ourselves for those accomplishments?  On the other hand, our choices to run ahead could cause consequences for ourselves or others, as did the actions of Abraham and Sariia.  Let’s just hold on and find out what God has in store for us!

Genesis 16:1-5 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee

.David – In the following passage, we see that the Lord promised that someone in David’s Line would always be king.  Other than taking that promise and trying to self-fulfill it, David  showed his trust in the Lord’s Word, and determined to wait for His time to place him in that position. It seems as though David would even be able to justify taking Saul’s life, as he could have claimed self defence.  The king hated David and was on a mission to destroy him. Having confidence in the Lord’s Word, David remembered what he was promised.  He didn’t know when or how, but he did believe and trusted God.

Psalm 132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.  David did make many mistakes, as we all do; nonetheless, God had His hand on him and indeed his line will continue throughout eternity.

1 Samuel 26:22-25 And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.The Lord render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the Lord delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the Lord’s anointed

.And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation. Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place

.Jonah – This part of history is not just for a children’s Sunday school lesson!  If we have been in church our entire lives or not even much at all, it is very likely we have heard about Jonah and the big fish! Not really wanting to do the task God asked of him, Jonah considered it wise somehow, to try

running away from our omnipotent Lordrks are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?Hebrews 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.Jeramiah 23:24  Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

Jonah Chapter 1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Please take some time to consider these situations and apply them to your life.  If God has called you to do something, be thankful that He is sending you out to do whatever it is.  The task does not have to be significant.  What carries the heaviest weight is your willingness and obedience.

Mary had no idea what awaited her, but she trusted the Lord and gave herself to serve Him by carrying the Christ child. Although she watched Jesus suffer tremendous agony, God’s Will was accomplished by this otherwise, obscure young lady.

Don’t eagerly run ahead of God like a dog pulling its owner down the sidewalk.  Don’t lag behind like a kid whining for candy at the checkout line.  You don’t have to “keep up” with  the Lord, because He carries you!

Almighty Father

Thank You for this and every day You give us

Please forgive our sins against You, others and ourselves

Thank You for allowing us to participate in Your Work here on earth

Please find us willing to obey, because we know when You call

We will be able to do the tasks You set before us

If we misunderstand, please block any avenue, not ordained by You

Please give us clarity and discernment

Let us be willing to pick up or put down whatever it is You are leading us to start or cease

When we need to stick with something, please allow confirmation and encouragement that we are in Your Will

But when we are led to leave an idea, a person, a situation, we ask for wisdom to do so

Let us long to please You

We love You and we want to display that in our lives by obedience to our Father

We delight in You Lord, please allow us to delight You in how we live the blessing of life

In the Name of Jesus

Amen

About voicevessel bwc

First, and most importantly, I love Jesus Christ and I trust in Him as my Lord and Savior. I was raised in a Christian home by a godly dad and mom (who planned and had me in July before turning 42 in August), and 5 older siblings. My father passed away when I was 7 and my mother (who went to be with the Lord in 2005 at 81) never remarried. As a child, I was bullied at school, so I did not have many friends. I didn't want to tell my mom this because I knew she had enough worry being a widow at 50. I know what it is like to be lonely. As an adult, God showed me the value of His Friendship and has blessed me, too, with rich relationships with dear friends who also love the Lord. My husband and I (married 31 years as of 2020), have three wonderful, adult children and son-in-law as well as three darling grandchildren. Along with many others, my husband lost his job, but we refuse to be fearful or angry. The Lord has provided for us and we are so thankful for the opportunity to express gratitude through personal contact and occasional memories I share through writing. I believe the Lord has given me a venue to engage with others and a means to share His Word. Thank you for checking out my page. I hope you enjoy what you read. If there is anything positive or insightful in the devotionals (NOT CALLING MY WRITING "INSPIRED" by any means!), I give all credit and glory to Jesus Christ! On the other side of that, when something makes no sense, that's all me
